Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book a place to stay after getting there, yet once I got there, a large conference was happening and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend the night in an establishment that was open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more folks who show such kindness.

I must have looked confused because a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she took as a young woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I never saw her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. I hope life has rewarded her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
