This new direction follows major restructuring at the government-backed institute, including the stepping down of its former chief executive last month after both employee protests and official demands for comprehensive reform. Increasing Digital Threats The latest project comes amid rising apprehension about Britain's vulnerability to internet outages and cyber-attacks. Recent events have highlighted these weaknesses, including a major outage affecting global cloud computing and recent cyber-attacks that halted manufacturing at key facilities and distribution networks across various businesses. Management and Supervision A former commander of the UK's air and space warfare centre will provide findings next month on how the government-funded institute can most effectively assist the scope of official artificial intelligence goals in national security, homeland protection and information gathering. Operational Restructuring The institute's chair, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been terminated, spun out or finished because they do not align with the new direction.
