As he approaches his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is inextricably linked to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

Arteta was appointed on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an cup win within months. However, that first major trophy remains his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the landmark with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met just after his role was made public.

League Position and Pressure

Given that second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that results must come sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

He went on to explain, stressing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team faces the weekend fixture managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is expected to sideline him for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
