The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
