UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
