When Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Popular Picture Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her back yard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds ringing out around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the slope soaked, she noticed someone coming up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone running in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and medical teams caring for numerous those hurt.

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting began right into late that nighttime.
